NOVAK DJOKOVIC has reacted to winning the US Open by lauding his rivalry with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Djokovic has won the US Open for a third time after overcoming Juan Martin del Potro at Flushing Meadows last night.

The Serb was at his bulldozing best, sweeping his opponent aside 6-3, 7-6. 6-3 to match Pete Sampras’ haul of 14 Grand Slam titles.

The real Novak Djokovic is now back, three years after contemplating retirement because of a serious elbow injury.

The 31-year-old won Wimbledon in July and is now closing in on Federer and Nadal at the top of the Slam charts.

And, speaking after his US Open triumph, Djokovic claimed he now relished matches against the duo because of how they improve him as a player.

“Maybe 10 years ago I would say I’m not so happy to be part of this era with Nadal and Federer,” he said.

“Today I really am. I feel like these guys, rivalries with these guys, matches with Federer and Nadal, have made me the player I am, have shaped me into the player I am today.

“I owe it to them.”

Del Potro, meanwhile, has backed Djokovic to continue to push Federer and Nadal for tennis’ biggest trophies.

The Argentine said: “Of course he can.

“He has 14 already. He won two Grand Slam in one year.

“He’s healthy. He has a great team working with him.

Hopefully him, Rafa, Roger is still fighting for Grand Slam, because is so nice to watch them fighting for the history.

“I mean, we just do what we can against them.

“But Novak has everything to make records in this sport.”

Djokovic will be aiming for Grand Slam No 15 when the Australian Open kicks off in January.
